Desk Shield

Due to COVID-19, there is a necessity for schools to rethink how they will teach its students in a safe manner. Desk shields have become a common safety device, but with an average price around $100, it can be difficult for some schools to absorb those costs even with the stimulus money provided. Because of this, I set out to design a desk shield that I could manufacture for less than $45, therefore increasing the likelihood that a school could get as many desk shields as they needed.

The Design

Rather than using rigid sheets of plastic, the idea was to create a plywood frame for rigidity and use thinner plastic (.006" PETG) which is much cheaper. The final design uses two pieces of plywood close to each other that act as a channel for the plastic to sit in.

Configurations

Not all tables are the same. To accommodate different tables and use cases, every part of the plywood frame is pressure fit and you can use different end pieces to make an x-pattern for circular tables or connect them in a u-shape for a teacher's desk.
